Why Digital education and AI matters

Digital education and artificial intelligence (AI) are transforming 21st-century education by offering personalised learning experiences, increasing accessibility, and fostering innovation. AI enables tailored approaches that adapt to individual student needs, enhancing engagement and understanding. It also breaks down traditional barriers to education by making resources accessible to learners worldwide, regardless of location or ability, and promoting inclusivity through tools like real-time translation and speech recognition. Moreover, AI equips students with essential tech skills for the future, while also streamlining administrative tasks, allowing educators to focus on teaching. Together, digital education and AI are reshaping the way we learn, making education more efficient, inclusive, and future-focused.

Dr. John Easton

IBM Distinguished Engineer

Practical AI education at large scale

Whether you believe the scale of AI’s impact or not, there is a real need to educate learners about it.  Most students outside of IT-related subjects are getting their AI knowledge from “practical dabbling” with tools such as ChatGPT or Gemini.  This doesn’t necessarily expose them to the realities of what AI tools can do well and what they can’t.  Without that realisation, they are at a disadvantage.

John Easton is an IBM Distinguished Engineer currently leading a team of technical professionals helping large enterprise clients on their journeys to successful cloud computing. He is internationally known for his work helping clients exploit large scale distributed computing infrastructures, particularly those utilising new and emerging technologies. Over his time at IBM, John has led initiatives around hybrid systems, computational acceleration, grid computing, energy efficiency and mission-critical systems. John is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of both the Institute for Engineering and Technology and the British Computer Society.
